Although many homeowners go with a neutral color scheme, the use of strong and bright colors has become increasingly popular, especially for large or bright rooms. You may not have considered a blue living room, but a few coats of paint can make a big difference to one of the rooms where you spend the most time.

As well as being one of the most popular colors, blue has always been associated with elegance and a feeling of freshness. Having a blue living room allows you to use the color to create a calming and stylish effect. Light blue or turquoise is often the color of choice for rooms in beach homes or vacation rentals, and blue and white stripes evoke elegance or royalty. Rugs, carpets, curtains, cushions and other accessories can all be different shades of blue to add to the overall effect.

One of the advantages of a blue living room is that there are so many shades of blue to choose from, ranging from light shades, pastel colors and blues which look more green, to a rich velvety or midnight blue. Blue also looks great with most other colors, but especially with white, brown, green, yellow or beige.

Although a blue living room can look elegant, cozy or relaxing, be careful not to make your room too blue. Dark colors in a small room can make the room feel even smaller, while light colors in a large room give an impression of an even larger room. If you don’t want your walls blue, consider painting them cream or white and having some blue accessories, such as curtains or pillows. Too many different shades of blue together generally don’t look good, and you should also be careful of having too many stripes or other visual effects, which aren’t always easy on the eye.
