Silver-Themed Dining Room vs. Gold-Themed Dining Room

Last updated on October 12, 2023

When it comes to the dining room, the question of design often comes down to gold or silver. Find out which you should choose.

When it comes to creating a luxurious dining room, there are often two routes you could go down: silver or gold.

For many people, the question can be answered pretty simply. Silver is a beautiful, durable metal, and it’s a pretty safe option if you want a dining room that looks elegant but not overly elegant – to the point where it becomes pretentious.

However, there are homeowners who like to push the boat out with their home design, and a gold-based dining room can be a great way to make a statement and instil a mystical quality to bring the space alive.

But if you’re struggling to choose between a silver-themed dining room or a gold one, how exactly can you make your mind up? To help you out, we’ve listed the benefits of both gold and silver, as well as a few words on which we think is the best choice:

What's Inside

The Benefits of a Silver-Themed Dining Room

There’s a reason why most dining rooms and restaurants choose silver over gold. For starters, this is a durable metal that can neutralise a dining space. It looks luxurious, but it isn’t overpowering and can easily compliment other colors that might be included in the set-up – including colorful flowers in silver vases or even colorful food on silver plates.

Choosing a silver theme over gold could also come down to how far you want the luxury element to go. Looking at religious households for a moment, it’s far more common to find a silver etrog box or menorah in a Jewish home, and the same can be said for any religion, from Christianity to Islam, to Hinduism.

Some table ornaments, especially for spiritual households like this, have more of an emotional purpose than a practical one. With gold being more “showy”, many households find it more appropriate to go with silver, which is more sleek and stark, to let the meaning of the object do the talking. This must then be matched with silverware to create coherency.

The Benefits of Gold-Themed Dining Room

As mentioned before, however, some homeowners like to push their interior design a little further. A gold-themed dining room can be an immediate way to make a statement and ensure that there’s a visual impact every time you walk into the room. It’s also worth noting that the reason silver might be so popular is because of how expensive gold cutlery was in the past.

Just a century ago, gold cutlery would be reserved for the wealthiest in society. But in 2023, gold cutlery, plates, cups or ornaments are mostly made from zinc and copper, with only a thin coating of gold on the surface. This makes it far cheaper than it would have been historically, with no scrimping on the elegance and luxury it can radiate.

It’s worth noting, also, that designing a dining room is all about the experience you want to create. Silver can look very beautiful, but gold is guaranteed to offer a different experience and make your dining room stand out as a result.

What Do We Think?

If you want our opinion, however, we’d say that the best way to instil luxury into your dining room is with good, durable silverware. Of course, there are many benefits to gold, but silver is perfect in nearly every area, with no possibility that it might look too ostentatious. In this instance, we think it’s best to stay safe and create a dining room that is both luxurious and sleek.
